Convertible notebooks, especially laptops with a detachable design, are the most versatile; they provide absolute freedom to use them as you want. You can enjoy movies on your tablet while snuggling in bed and later use it as a powerful laptop by attaching a keyboard.

Laptops with a convertible design fit well with many people’s lifestyles; it’s the core reason behind their wide popularity. You don’t need to switch between your tablet and laptop back and forth, which is the real purpose of a convertible laptop. Also, you can avoid data transfer headaches since it will be available on a single device. This article will find the best laptops with detachable keyboards/screens (hybrid laptops) available in 2024.
If you’re in a hurry, check out our top choices:
- Microsoft Surface Pro 8 (for Hybrid)
- Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 (for Convertible)
“Convertible” and “hybrid” laptops are different, but these terms are used interchangeably. A “convertible” laptop, also called a “2-in-1,” comes with an attached keyboard. It can be flipped back or collapsed according to the design to use as a tablet. Since the keyboard is permanently attached, they are heavier than hybrid laptops.
On the other hand, a “hybrid” laptop comes with a detachable screen/keyboard that provides complete freedom and can be used as a “real” tablet.
Nowadays, many latest convertible laptops aren’t behind in portability compared to hybrid notebooks. That’s why it would be unfair not to add them to this list. In the end, I have included some convertible or 2-in-1 notebooks that you can consider.
Best Detachable and Convertible Laptops of 2024 – Pros and Cons
Before choosing a hybrid laptop, you should know some pros and cons. These factors are somewhat applicable to the convertible notebook as well.
Pros
- Cost Effectiveness: Comparatively, purchasing a tablet and a laptop separately would be more expensive than buying a hybrid or convertible laptop. However, convertible laptops are very costly when you put your feet into the luxury segment, but you can get a solid one for under 1,000$.
- Portability: The main advantage of having a detachable laptop; a single device can play both “tablet’ and “laptop” roles wisely. It’s always easy to manage one device rather than two. It’s the most viable choice for on-the-go use.
- Drawing Capability: Most 2-in-1 notebooks offer a stylus, which you can use for drawing, sketching, or note-taking. Hybrid laptops provide an even more convenient user experience since no keyboard is permanently attached.
- Slim and Stylish: arguably, hybrid or convertible laptops look captivating compared to the traditional design. Also, they are compact and thin, which makes them easy to slip into your backpack.
Cons
- Screen Size: Hybrid laptops are designed to keep portability in mind; therefore, mostly, they don’t offer a larger screen which might be a problem for some users. However, you can attach an external monitor when working on the desk.
- Performance: Undoubtedly, many hybrid and convertible laptops stand toe-to-toe with traditional laptops, but they aren’t designed to handle rigorous processing. You have to shelter under traditional laptops when we talk about playing the latest games or rendering ultra-HD videos.
- Overheating: If you put a continuous high CPU load on the hybrid or convertible laptops, they get overheated. The compact and slim design might be one of the reasons behind this problem because there is no proper ventilation compared to the traditional notebooks. Some compact laptops come without fans, so they get hot even sooner.
- Less Backup: It’s hard to manage the ultra-slim design with an extended capacity battery; that’s why most hybrid and convertible laptops don’t offer ideal battery life. However, it’s changing gradually due to the latest battery technology and energy-efficient chips.
Let’s look at my top-rated recommendations for hybrid laptops in 2024.

My previous pick Asus Rog Flow Z13, is a brilliant option, but why Microsoft Surface Pro 8 is the best choice?
The unique thing about the Microsoft Surface Book 8 is – its availability with several configurations. You can choose from the Intel Core i5, 8GB, and 256GB SSD to the Intel Core i7, 32GB RAM, and 1TB.
Therefore, if your requirements are limited, you can opt for a lower variant and save money.
Along with that robust hardware, it features a premium quality 13-inch PixelSens Flow display with 2880 x 1920 pixels, 120Hz refresh rate, and PlusAdaptive color.
The Microsoft Surface Pro 8 is quite a versatile machine; you can use it as a productive laptop, drawing tablet, or entertainment device. Surface Laptop Studio doesn’t offer a detachable design, unlike the Surface Book series, and it is a kind of disappointment for some users.
Generally, most convertible and detachable laptops are designed for portability and on-the-go use; that’s why they come with low-watt processors and integrated graphics memory. The Microsoft Surface Book 3 is a remarkable exception; this machine is portable like a tablet and powerful like a robust workstation.
The Surface Pro Book 3 is one of the most robust laptops on this list. It means it can handle intense graphics processing along with rigorous multitasking. It accompanies up to Intel Core i7 1065G7 processor, 32GB memory, 1TB SSD storage, and the Nvidia GTX 1060 Ti discrete GPU. Whether you’re a graphics designer, programmer, or writer, it’s an excellent option; many professionals like this machine.

- Marathon battery life
- Incredible build quality

Best Convertible and Hybrid Laptops of 2024
Hybrid laptops are great, but manufacturers are slightly moving to convertible or 2-in-1 designs; that’s why only a handful of options are available. For example, Microsoft has replaced its Surface Book line with the Surface Studio, which isn’t a hybrid laptop anymore. Also, I haven’t heard from Acer after Switch 7 Black Edition, which was a great hybrid notebook.
I have tried to collect all the latest and most reliable notebooks that offer a detachable screen. Also, I have suggested two convertible laptops, which you might also like. If you have any questions or suggestions, please comment below.
